GUY BUTTERY AND THE GQEBERHA QUARTET
With David Bester (violin), Jan-Hendrik Harley (viola), Lynn Daphne Rudolph (viola), Mariechen Meyer (double bass) and Guy Buttery (acoustic guitar, sitar, and mbira)
This recital creates an enhanced musical interaction between contemporary classical music and Guy Buttery’s distinctive compositional style. Composing and arranging these two forces has been the drive behind this project, which ultimately brought this dynamic collaboration with the Gqeberha Quartet to life. Each member of the quartet is treated as an independent musical voice, creating unique string textures, polyphonic melodic lines, and polyrhythms, rooted in Buttery’s adventurous yet accessible musical style.

BEAUTY IN VARIATION/VARIATION IN BEAUTY
With Nina Schumann (piano)
How does one describe a recital made up of a variety of beautiful pieces? For beauty is subjective and can take many forms. Added to that, the word “variation” suggests variety, yet the conventions of classical variation form were more of an inhibition than an inspiration. In this recital, the juxtaposition of works by four composers – Bach, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff and Medtner – serves to underscore not only the traditional variation form and its “recomposition”, but also the conversation that can be had between composers based on shared aesthetics.
• Duration: 65 minutes
• Date and time: Saturday 27 November, 15:00
• Venue: Oudtshoorn Burgersentrum
