But Instead Of Only Showing The Ways In Which Early Twentieth Century Artists Depicted The Landscape, This Exhibition Also Brings Other Artists To The Conversation. Contemporary South African Artists Were Invited To Depict The Landscape Through Their Own Lens, By Using The Landscape Prints As Art Material Or Reference. Consequently, The Historical Prints Are Positioned In Relation To Contemporary Perspectives Of People Who Currently Reside And Work In The Country, Experience The Landscapes In Different Ways And Notice Different Things. Land Has Multiple, Strong Political, Socio-Economic And Ecological Underpinnings – The Narratives Of Which Are Never Neutral. Shaped By Memories, Myths And Narratives, Land Is An Object And Site Of Dispute.Bringing A Variety Of Artistic And Conceptual Approaches Of More Than 30 Artists Together, Viewers Are Invited To Consider How Representations Of Land Are Always Constructed Rather Than Natural Objective Documentations. Because By Oneself, One Cannot See Everything. The Winterveld Has Long Been Home To People With Scant Resources And Limited Opportunities To Earn An Income – Trying Circumstances The Project Was Set Up To Address. Indeed 'Mapula' Means 'Mother Of Rain' In Setswana, Connoting The Bringing Of A Harvest And Good Fortune. But Covid-19 Brought With It A New Set Of Challenges In This Community, And That Complicated The Project’s Capacity To Support People.
