Bigger music program at the 9th Klein Karoo

“A greater number of shows spliced with more variety guarantee your money’s worth at the 9th edition of the Klein Karoo Klassique, which will take place from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 August,” says Rhodé Snyman, CEO of Kunste Onbeperk, the host of the festival in Oudtshoorn.

“Owing to financial support from the Rupert music establishment, it is possible for the ticket prices to stay the same as last year and to present 8 shows instead of 7,” says Snyman.

“Tickets are available from Friday 5 May and festival goers need to act fast to get their hands on a special bargain deal which typically sells out in no time. The deal in question offers access to all 8 shows for only R700, at R87.50 a show. If tickets are purchased separately, attendance adds up to R1000. The deal lets you save a hefty R300,” says Snyman.

The 9th Klassique opens with a double SAMA-winner guitar duo, CH2 (Corneille Hutten en Dirkie van Staden). They play classical masterpieces from Tárrega, Rodrigo, Bach, their own flamenco-style compositions as well as arrangements of Afrikaans hits like Tussen treine en Vyfster.

Saturday’s program starts with a revisit of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Petrus de Beer (violin), Stanislav Angelov (accordion) and Schalk Joubert (bass guitar and presentation) arrange the timeless masterpiece of Vivaldi without the support of the string orchestra for which it was originally composed. The sonnets have been translated from Italian into Afrikaans by Dr. Dawid de De Villiers.

The Camerata Tinta Barocca ensemble features Bridget Rennie-Salonen (traverso), Jesse Groenewald (Baroque violin), Uwe Grosser (teorbe and baroque guitar), Cheryl de Havilland (baroque cello) and Erik Dippenaar (spinet) in a program of baroque music. Folk Baroque will be performed on authentic baroque instruments and includes the music of Barsanti, Geminiani, Scarlatti and Gow.

Saturday’s programme ends with Carmen – in die kleine, a concert version of one of the most famous operas in the classical canon. The opera has been reduced to an hour especially for Klassique, without inhibiting the integrity of the original piece. All the highlights will be performed chronologically, featuring singers performing more than just one role. On stage, expect to see Jolene McCleland (mezzo-soprano), Lauren Dasappa (soprano), Minette du Toit-Pearce (mezzo-soprano), Chris Mostert (tenor), Niël Rademan (baritone) and Raimondo van Staden (baritone). José Dias manages the piano accompaniment.

In Spieël-dans in die maanlig on Sunday morning, Jana van der Walt (harp) and Rina Schutte (cello) combine two favourite instruments for a program featuring a wide variety of music. They play Pärt’s Spiegel in Spiegel, Piazzolla’s Oblivion, Clair de Lune by Debussy, Bach’s Arioso and the Ave Maria by Gounod.

Beethoven Tango speaks to a curious musical palette and combines the finer quality of Zanta Hofmeyr’s classical technique (violin), with the improvisational skills of Charl du Plessis (piano). Their programme brings the fire of tango-rhythms, worldly music, jazz and Beethoven together and includes tango arrangements from the famous Für Elize.

The ATKV finale concert is, as ever, a showcase of South Africa’s best young musicians and features Megan Geoffrey Prins (piano), 2016 winner of ATKV-Muziq, Tatiana Thaele (flute), runner up of the competition and Palesa Malieloa (soprano), 2016 winner of the ATKV-Muziqanto. Thaele and Malieloa will be accompanied by Philippus Hugo on the piano.

“All eight performances will be held in the NG Moederkerk in Oudtshoorn. The area around the church will be equipped with a restaurant, CD shop and tasting experiences from the surrounding district. More information will soon be released,” says Snyman.

Tickets to individual shows are a R125 each and are available at Computicket, Shoprite/Checkers and House & Home. More information about the Karoo Klassique will soon be available on the festival’s new website at For more information follow Klassique on Facebook (@KleinKarooKlassique) or Twitter (@kkarooklassique).
